Getting several opportunities on the court, the South Winn volleyball team (7-16, 1-1 UIC) picked up a fourth-place finish at the Decorah Invite Saturday.
Dig Pink night
The Warriors had the home court advantage on Thursday evening capturing a conference win over Central Elkader (6-21, 1-2 UIC) in front of a large crowd coming to the gym to support Dig Pink and breast cancer awareness. The Warriors dominated the first set pulling out the 25-13 victory. In the second set, Central mounted a late comeback to pick up a win (24-26), but the Warriors responded with two big set wins to close out the night with sets of 25-18 and 25-10 for the 3-1 win.
Katrina Hageman and Janessa Zweibahmer led the way with eight kills each. Ali Heying dished out 26 assists with a great night setting and picked up four kills of her own. Eryn Luzum paced the Warriors with 23 digs while Avery Humpal added 13 digs. Luzum was on fire serving going 28-for-29 with nine aces and Emily Michels was 19-for-22 with five aces.
“This is always a great game for our girls to play in with the turn out we get from the community for Dig Pink Night. All levels for us (JJV, JV, and V) picked up wins on the night and we played in front of a high energy crowd supporting us the whole night. I was really pleased with our energy and effort all night long and we showed some great offensive signs up front. We served around the 90 percent range which is our goal and put up 22 aces to give us some easy points and momentum. Thanks to all that showed up to support a great cause this evening,” said Coach Alex Smith.

Fourth place
Saturday the Warriors competed at the Decorah Invite, finishing fourth in the eight-team tournament. Overall, South Winn went 2-4, with wins against Postville and MFL MarMac.
In pool play, the Warriors defeated Postville 21-15 and 21-18. The second match of the day South Winn was bested by Jesup by sets of 8-21 and 9-21. The second win of the day came in pool play again versus MFL MarMac by sets of 21-13 and 21-14. In the championship bracket, SW lost 2-1 to Kingsland (Minn.) 15-21, 21-15 and 6-15. In the second match Warriors once again battled Jesup on the court, falling 17-21 and 11-21. In the final match of the day, South Winn fell to Decorah 2-0 by sets of 6-21 and 4-21.
Four Warriors recorded double digit kills on the day — Katrina Hageman with 21, Jannessa Zweibahmer with 18, Morgan Kleve with 13 and Avery Humpal with 13. Ali Heying dished out 51 assists and Eryn Luzum put up 39 digs. Avery Humpal led the teams with six ace serves.
“At times I felt we played some of our best volleyball of the season. We really came out strong against MFL MarMac and kept one of the best hitters in the area in check by serving tough and being on the offensive with quality passing, setting, and attacking. Our girls played with a tremendous amount of energy and focus in that final pool play matchup. In the championship bracket, we knew we would be challenged, and unfortunately, we weren’t as consistent with our serving and serve receive that we need to be in order to compete with upper-level teams,” said Coach Smith.
