SW crowns one champ, team third

The South Winn wrestling team was provided solid performances by the strong nucleus of seniors at the Alburnett tournament Saturday to finish in a tie for third place with 104.5 points, along with Dike-New Hartford. Winning the team title with 222.5 points was Notre Dame, while host Alburnett earned runner-up with 161.5 points.

“This was another great day, where we saw some solid teams and competed against some good competition.  We had some solid performances led by our strong group of seniors. Ethan Maldonado was able to knock off a top-four kid in his weight class. Lane Quandahl, Tony Greve and Logan Hageman all put together some strong performances,” said Coach Jake Elsbernd.
Warriors senior Tony Greve was the lone grappler to be crowned a champion following the day’s competition. At 220 pounds, Greve had a pair of pins and decisions. He started the day with a 35-second fall over Youseff Rezbekahallah of Notre Dame. In round two, Greve threw Dillon Kapple of English Valley/Tri-County in 5:01. Cascade’s Cade Rausch put up a fight in round three as Greve earned an 8-4 decision. In the battle for first, Greve secured the title with a 3-1 decision over Dike-New Hartford’s Wil Textor.
Logan Hageman came up just short of the 195-pound title, finishing second. The senior put Alburnett’s Nash Hamilton on his back in 52 seconds in round two, the recorded a 15-0 tech fall over Ethan Klostermann of Epworth in round 3. Throwing Ashton Moore of English Valley/Tri-County in 1:22, put Hageman into round five versus Zach Adelmund of Dike-New Hartford. There, the SW senior saw his day end with a 5-3 decision in Adelmund’s favor.
Three other Warriors finished with a bronze including Lukas Weiss (126 pounds), Ethan Maldonado (132) and Lane Quandahl (182). 
South Winn will host one final match in the regular season Tuesday, Jan. 25. Competing with the Warriors will be North Butler, Central Springs, North Tama and Riceville beginning at 5:30 p.m.
