Avenging last year’s regional semifinal game and a contest earlier this season against South Winn, Wapsie Valley pushed the Red and White out of the postseason Wednesday in the Class 2A Region 7 Semifinal, 9-3.
South Winn ended the season with a 22-13 overall mark as the Upper Iowa Conference champions for the second straight year.
Playing at Wapsie Valley, the SW Warriors took some time to get the bats rolling as they went five innings without a hit or base runners.
The first scoring chance for either team came in bottom of the second. With Wapsie Valley base runners on first and third with one out, a pop fly to SW pitcher Aubree Gesing turned into a double play as the freshman southpaw turned and caught the first base runner off the bag.
A stand-up double for WV started the home Warriors in the bottom of the third frame. A walk and a steal with one out had Wapsie Valley threatening again to score; however, a fly ball to right field was cleanly fielded by Britney Hageman followed by Alyssa Holthaus from third to first on a grounder to get out of the scoring threat once again.
As the score remained 0-0, Wapsie Valley continued to have base runners and threatened to score in the bottom of the fourth with one out before the Red and White escaped for the third time on fly out to Chloe Wiltgen in left field and a cleanly fielded grounder to Aubrey Willey was fired to first as Wapsie Valley left another two runners stranded on the bases. With two down in the fifth, the home Warriors found a rhythm to score twice on South Winn errors.
The Red and White finally got on the bases and the board with three runs in the sixth. A bunt single by Izzy Kuboushek gave South Winn their first base runner as the throw to first went by the Wapsie Valley player. A deep fly ball to centerfield on an 0-2 count by Aubrey Willey gave the Red and White runners at second and third. Then a speedy Kuboushek scored on a fielder’s choice with a slap hit by Addison Timp that wasn’t in time at the plate. SW kept the runs coming as a wild pitch allowed Willey to cross the plate before Adrienne Winings drove in SW’s third run on a single to left field to give South Winn a 3-2 lead. Wapsie Valley was not to be denied as they took advantage of every opportunity in the bottom of the sixth to score seven runs which led to the 9-3 win.
South Winn have six hits in the contest including the double by Aubrey Willey. Addison Timp and Adrienne Winings rapped out RBI singles, while Avery Humpal, Chloe Wiltgen and Izzy Kuboushek also put the ball in play.
Gesing combined for time on the hill with Bailey Kuennen who was saddled with the loss.
