SW finishes eighth at Jesup tourney

By Becky Walz,

Playing a conference twinbill at home, the South Winn softball (8-6, 6-0 UIC) picked up two more UIC wins to remain undefeated in league play. The Warriors then took two days to compete in the annual Jesup tournament, going 1-3 in eighth place.

Another UIC sweep
In a pair of identical 12-0 scores, the Warriors handed West Central (1-8, 0-4 UIC) two losses Wednesday at home. En route to the victory, junior pitcher Eryn Luzum twirled her second no-hitter of the season with nine strikeouts in game one. The nightcap saw Morgan Kleve in the pitcher’s circle, allowing just two hits as the Warriors smacked out seven hits.

Jesup tourney
Friday and Saturday, the Warriors competed in the Jesup tournament, placing eighth overall.
“We played four very good teams over the weekend and got everyone on the team contributing as well as gaining experience with playing time,” said Coach Ken Buchheit.
In the first game Friday, South Winn knocked off Waterloo East (3-10), 12-5. The Warriors had 12 hits and were led by Alison Heying who had four of them. She also provided three RBI and two stolen bases. Morgan Kriener sent a ball out of the park for a grand slam.
“It was our best offensive game of the season,” said Coach Buchheit.
Facing Class 4A No. 10 West Delaware in game two, the Warriors struggled at the plate, connecting for just two hits in the 10-0 final in favor of the Hawks.
It was a rough start to Saturday with Lisbon (16-4) as South Winn’s Mary Frana and Heying were injured early. In the end, the Warriors filled in the holes and managed to plate some runs but came up short, 9-3.
Playing Class 2A and host Jesup for seventh place, the Warriors gave up an unearned run in the first and seventh frames to lose 2-1.
“Morgan (Kleve) pitched great and the girls made some great defensive plays to end innings. We had a couple girls out for the game and couldn’t get enough two-out hits to put more runs on the board,” noted Coach Buchheit.
