SW gets back on the course

Mother Nature surely has dampened the practice and progress of many teams, including the South Winn boys’ and girls’ golf teams. Thursday, April 28, the Warrior girls hosted Crestwood, while the boys competed against West Central who doesn’t field a girls’ squad.

UIC dual
The South Winn boys golf team competed in a 9-hole triangular meet against West Central and Crestwood on Thursday, April 28, at Silver Springs Golf and Country Club in Ossian, finishing second. Crestwood fired a 182 for the top spot, while the Warriors fashioned a 192. West Central finished the day with 222 strokes.
Individual medal honors were swept by Crestwood’s Landen Bergen and Cade Korsmo with each carving out 43s on the par 36 course.
Freshman Jackson Goltz and senior Jacob Bohr paced the Warrior field with 46s, while Shaun Klimesh toured the course with a 49. Completing the South Winn scorecard with a 51 was Martin Horstman. Brady Lensing also improved on his career best, shooting a 53, while sophomore Jordan Baumler finished with a 58.
“Despite the weather, we were able to put together a decent score. Jackson (Goltz) and Jacob (Bohr) were especially impressive. With the postseason around the corner, we, as a team, need to do a better job of maintaining focus and stopping the bleeding on a round that isn’t going great. We can’t allow our scores to blow up. I am very glad to see, however, that when some of our top golfers are struggling, we have the depth to step up and still compete,” said Coach Michael Wenthold.

Terrific scores
Squaring off with the larger schools, the girls fell short versus Crestwood 251 to 242 Thursday, followed by a triangular at Waukon with Charles City.
“This golf season has been one of very limited practice and hasn’t allowed us to get the reps needed to hone our skills. Our kids are out there grinding at meets and working through the game on their own. Each meet there are different players who turn in some good scores for us,” said Coach Glenna Munuswamy. “By the end of the season, our goal is to have 4 players shooting in the 50s so we can card a respectable team score.”
Thursday’s medalist by a cardback was Cadet Kaiya Holten who tied with teammate Cameron Moellers with 50 strokes.
Katrina Hageman turned in a 56, while senior Ruthie Frana fired her season low at 60. With a 67 was Annie Ondrashek, while Brooke Steffans and Julia Carnesi carded 68s, respectively. Kylee Tieskoetter also toured the course with a 72.
Friday, the Lady Warriors played in the rain in Waukon, carding their lowest team score of the season with a 243, edged out by Charles City’s 239.
Once again it was Hageman paving the way for South Winn as the round’s runner-up as she fired a 54. Steffans and Elizabeth Bohr carded respectable scores with a 61 and 62, respectively. Ruthie Frana’s 66 completed the team score, while Carnesi (68) and Hannah Pahl (70) were also on the course.

This week
The Warriors were at MFL MarMac Monday and hosts Turkey Valley today (Tuesday, May 3) at the South Winn Golf and Country Club near Calmar. Thursday, May 5, the Red and White will make up a dual with North Fayette Valley, then cap off the week versus Clayton Ridge Friday, May 6.
