SW girls fall to TigerHawks

By Becky Walz,

The South Winn girls’ basketball team (2-13, 2-11 UIC) fell behind early Tuesday night and never recovered, losing to North Fayette Valley (15-1, 11-0 UIC) in West Union, 52-38.

Things didn’t look good from the beginning, with the Warriors scoring just four points in the first eight minutes to trail 12-4 after the first quarter. The struggles continued in the second as SW fell behind 22-9 at the half. The Warriors scored seven points in the third period and trailed 41-16 with a frame left. The Red and Gray scorched the nets in the fourth, outscoring the TigerHawks 22-11; however, it wasn’t enough to erase the deficit.

Mary Frana produced a team-high nine points, six rebounds and five steals. In the scorebook with eight points apiece were Katrina Hageman and Josie Tieskoetter. Tieskoetter also hauled in eight boards to go with four steals and two blocks. Putting in seven points was Janessa Zweibahmer to go with seven caroms.

“We played hard and played really good defense which helped keep us in the game until the third quarter. We got down big in the third but we played really well in the fourth quarter to close the gap a bit,” said Coach Justin Izer. “We need to use the fourth quarter as a stepping stone and build off of it as we have West Central and Central Elkader coming to town this week.”
