SW girls fall twice in UIC action at home

By Becky Walz,

Two games in two days didn’t help the South Winn girls’ basketball team (2-15, 2-13 UIC) as the Lady Warriors dropped both contests.

Oh, so close

Thursday night, the Warriors hosted West Central (6-11, 4-9 UIC) in a make-up contest, falling 45-34.

South Winn was outscored 11-7 in the first quarter, but rebounded to tie the score at halftime, 17-17. During the third period, the Red and Gray allowed the Blue Devils to score the first six points before getting on the board with a Josie Tieskoetter trey and Morgan Kleve basket. WC finished the quarter on a 7-2 run to push again 30-24 over the Warriors. In the final period, SW made up the difference with baskets by Kleve and Tieskoetter from both the floor and charity stripe, tying it once again at 32-all. The Blue Devils finished the final 2:14 on a 7-0 run to take the win back to Maynard.

“We were right there and we had our chances. West Central hit some big three’s down the stretch that we just couldn’t quite overcome. We played hard and this is a good learning curve for us. Playing these close games is good experience for these girls in the future,” said Coach Justin Izer.

Tieskoetter and Kleve combined for 24 points, with 12 each. Tieskoetter, a freshman, made is a double-double with 10 rebounds to go with three assists. Under the basket, Kleve grabbed seven boards.

Against the other Warriors

Friday night, South Winn hosted Central Elkader (9-9, 8-6 UIC), falling to the other Warriors in the UIC, 48-27, at home.

South Winn scored 10 points or less in every quarter. The hometown Warriors fell behind, 11-4, in the first quarter. By halftime Central had extended its lead to 27-11. The visitors outscored South Winn 21-17 in the second half.

“We really struggled to get anything going on the offensive side. We were not able to get the ball moving side to side against that zone. We just need to keep improving as the season progresses,” said Coach Izer.

Josie Tieskoetter had eight points, seven rebounds and three steals to lead the way. Chipping in six points, three boards and two assists was Katrina Hageman.
