It was a perfect night for the South Winn cross country invite, held Tuesday at South Winn Golf and Country Club outside of Calmar.
The Warriors hosted numerous squads in the meet. In addition to a junior high race, there was one girls race and one boys race, with no separation between JV and varsity.
First and second
It was a close finish between two area teams with the Class 1A No. 5 Warriors edging Class 3A No. 14 Decorah for the top spot. South Winn finished with 47 points, while the Vikes tallied 49.
Warrior senior Josie Tieskoetter posted a time of 20:47.4, good for fourth, with Ava Franzen close behind in fifth. The freshman stopped the clock at 20:50.5. Maddy Jansen just missed the top 10 with her time of 21:12.7, good for 11th place. In 12th it was Annie Hageman with a time of 21:16.0. Completing the team score for South Winn was Karissa Wenthold. The junior rounded the course in 21:49.9, good for 18th. Touring the course in 22:26.3 was Izzy Kuboushek to take 26th place, while Lauren Ondrashek completed the 5K in 23:16.6, taking 37th. Rounding out the line-up for South Winn was Aubrey Willey. The senior finished 57th in 24:46.2.
Decorah was led by sophomore Amelia Roe. The Class 3A No. 15-ranked harrier sprinted down the final stretch, earning silver in 19:04.3. Not far behind was freshman Olivia Volkmann. She garnered sixth in 20:59.4. Senior Grace Brynsaas had a good race, finishing in 21:16.3, good for 13th. Lily Sandhorst stopped the clock at 21:26.2 to take 15th, with Amelia Wadsworth rounding out the scorecard in 16th. The junior had a time of 21:33.6. Rounding out the top 20 finishes for the Vikes were Ana Simon in 19th with a time of 21:50.8 and Deborah Hougen in 20th in 21:52.2.
Turkey Valley had two harriers on the course as well. Bella Stika earned a top-10 spot, finishing eighth in 21:04.4, while Hazel Nieman rounded the course in 23:35.7, good for 43rd.
In the boys race
With 43 points, the Class 3A No. 17 Vikes finished second to Class 2A No. 2 Waukon who tallied 30 points. The home team garnered 163 to finish fifth.
Decorah junior led the way and broke the tape in 16:31.4. Going through the course in 17:26.0, D’mitry Lesser finished seventh with Landyn Hook not far behind in ninth. The junior crossed the finish line in 17:27.6. Garrett See and Henry Weis rounded out the Viking scoring in 12th and 14th places respectively. See posted a time of 17:40.2, while Weis finished in 17:43.8.
South Winn was led by senior Abe Conway. He finished 16th overall in 18:00.1. A few spots back in 24th was Brad Dahl in 18:35.2. In 20:24.9, Bo Wangsness came through to finish 61st. Lukas Weiss toured the course in 20:36.1, earning 73rd. Completing the team score was Brennan Franzen. He earned 78th in 20:56.1.
On the course for the Trojans, Russell Nieman crossed the finish line 26th. The senior posted a time of 18:41.8. Bode Balk’s time of 20:25.5 was good for 64th, while Avery Franzen finished 92nd in 21:46.9.
