SW girls send four to state; Myers punches ticket

By Becky Walz,

In the inaugural year of girls wrestling in the state of Iowa, South Winn will send four to the state-sanctioned event later this week. The Warriors were part of the Super Regional which competed at Luther College Friday with South Winn finishing fifth as a team with 116.5 points. No. 7 Osage won the Region 8 title with 243 points.
The top four in each weight class from each regional punched tickets to the first state meet sanctioned by the Iowa Girls High School Athletic Union, with a total of 32 girls advancing to state. The state meet will be held at the Xtream Arena in Coralville, Thursday and Friday, Feb. 2-3.
“Friday was a great day overall. We came knowing that we had three really good opportunities and a couple other chances to make something happen if we wrestled well. We had a couple very good rounds to start the day and put three in the finals,” said Coach Ethan Adams. “We saw many of our girls bring things in from the season and put them to work on the mat, which is continually exciting as I really feel like we’ve continued to improve throughout the year. I am extremely proud of all our girls.”

Four advance
At 110 pounds, Josie Hageman led the Warriors as South Winn’s first-ever state qualifier after reaching the finals. The senior threw Alburnett’s Hallie Portwood in 2:57 in the quarterfinals and defeated Addalyn Isaacson of Crestwood in the semifinal by a 5-2 decision. In the final Hageman faced No. 2 Jalynn Goodale of Osage and fell in 56 seconds to punch her ticket to state as the runner-up.
The first regional champion for the Warriors came at 120 pounds. Kaydn Meyer started her quest for the title with a 19-2 tech fall over Ava McDermott of Dubuque Wahlert in the quarterfinal. In the semifinal, the junior defeated Mae Wedemeier of Sumner-Fredericksburg by a 6-5 decision. The 120-pound title was clinched when Meyer threw Odessa Nibbelink of Crestwood in 3:26.
First-year wrestler Maddy Jansen also punched her ticket to state as the third-place finisher at 135 pounds. With a full bracket to contend with, the freshman had to wrestle six times to secure her spot at state. Jansen’s day began with a fall over Olivia Hoy of New Hampton/Turkey Valley in 56 seconds. A quarterfinal loss to Ayla Osterkamp of Dubuque Hempstead lit a fire for Jansen. The SW grappler battled back with consolation falls over Emma Allie of Clear Lake in 36 seconds, Lauryn Silvey of Iowa Falls-Alden in 1:30 and Mayleigh Medberry of Central Elkader in 5:23. In the battle for third, Jansen once again faced Osterkamp, this time getting the better of the Hempstead wrestler with a fall in 1:22.
No. 6 Izzy Kipp was also a champion at 190 pounds. It was a couple of falls for the senior in the quarterfinal and semifinal rounds as Kipp threw Abigail Gauf of Dubuque Senior then Kylie Willems of AGWSR at the end of the respective first rounds. In the final, Kipp outlasted No. 7 Leah Steward of Charles City to win the decision 7-4.
“We finished in fifth place out of 20 as a team today behind four schools that are all classes bigger than us in other sports, and I think that is just further proof of how impressive these girls have been today throughout the season. I am extremely proud of this group. They’re great teammates, and a true pleasure to coach,” added Coach Adams.

NH/TV’s Myers to state
New Hampton/Turkey Valley had three Chickasaws to advance to state, including Turkey Valley freshman Keira Myers at 140 pounds. Myers first win was over Waukon’s Eva Whalen in 2:55. In the quarterfinal, she defeated Kylie Blunt of Charles City by a 4-3 decision. Her battle to finish in the top four began after falling to Moorea Brown of Center Point-Urbana in the semifinal. Myers then threw Clear Lake’s Emery Hippen in the consolation semifinal. Once thrown in the third-place match by Taya Hollingsworth of BCLUW-SH, Myers was awarded fourth place by virtue of no contest, having already defeated Hippen once.
