After the holiday hiatus, the South Winn girls’ basketball team (4-8, 3-6 UIC) were back on the court at home Thursday and Friday, going 1-1.

The comeback
It took big offensive pushes in the second and fourth frames for the Warrior girls to come out on top in a game with Lanesboro (7-5) Thursday, 42-35.
Falling behind 19-8 in the opening frame, South Winn forged a path to the lead 24-23 at halftime. Lanesboro wasn’t deterred as the two squads swapped the lead in the third with Burros on top 33-29. In the final eight minutes, the Lady Warriors held the Lanesboro offense to two points while dropping in 13 for the win.
“That was a true team effort tonight. I thought our ball movement was very good which helped lead to some open looks. Our defensive efforts in the second and fourth quarter really helped pave the way to pull this off,” said Coach Justin Izer.
The Warriors had a nice scoring balance with four different girls scoring at least six points including a 14-point performance from Alyssa Holthaus to go with nine rebounds. Karissa Wenthold, Allison Hageman and Charlotte Moonen all dropped in six points.

Scoring – Alyssa Holthaus 14; Karissa Wenthold 6; Allison Hageman 6; Charlotte Moonen 6; Loleta Ryan 4; Adrienne Winings 2; Chloe Wiltgen 2; Aubrey Willey 1

A close one
Back on the hardwood, the Warriors had a fight on their hands Friday as Clayton Ridge (5-7, 4-5 UIC) visited Calmar and left with a 39-37 win.
“We played really hard and continued to battle throughout the night. We had our chances at the end, we just had a lot of shots roll out of the rim,” noted Coach Izer.
Out of the gate the Eagles edged the Warriors 6-5. The pace picked up for both UIC squads in the second quarter, allowing South Winn to lead 16-15 at halftime. With the score knotted at 26 after three frames, it came down to the fourth and the final possession.
Freshman Chloe Wiltgen paced the Warriors with nine points and two steals, while Wenthold added eight points.
