After a complete performance Thursday versus West Central for the win, the South Winn girls’ basketball team (6-12, 4-10 UIC) struggled to get its offense going at Central Elkader Friday night.
Make-up game
The Warriors were in control of Thursday’s contest from start to finish versus West Central (6-12, 2-10 UIC), taking home the 58-38 win.
“We played hard all night and when the shots fall early it really helps set the tone offensively. Scoring 23 points in the first quarter ignited our confidence. Every adjustment they mad we had an answer for. Defensively we did a great job at not letting their shooters get good looks. We did a better job doubling down on the big girl which made it tough for her to finish around the rim,” said Coach Justin Izer.
After running out to a 23-15 first quarter lead, the scoring slowed for both squads in the second period that saw SW take a 29-22 lead into the locker room. The Warriors put the pedal back on the gas in the third, outscoring the Blue Devils 18-4 for a significant advantage with eight minutes to play.
On fire offensively for SW was Morgan Kleve with 22 points to go with eight rebounds and three steals. Janessa Zweibahmer put down 13 points and grabbed three boards, while Josie Tieskoetter was there for eight points, seven rebounds and three steals.

Back on the road
Returning to the hardwood 24 hours later, the Warriors had a tough go Friday at Central Elkader (14-3, 11-2 UIC), falling 40-15.
South Winn kept the home team in check in the first period, trailing by one, 8-7 and 19-9 at halftime. The slower than normal second half doused the hopes of SW claiming a victory as the Central Warriors lead 33-13 with eight minutes to play.
“We really struggled on the offensive end and just couldn’t get a good rhythm. Defensively we played good enough to compete. They can really shoot the three-ball, but we did a pretty good job running them off the line,” concluded Coach Izer.
Kleve paced the South Winn field with seven points and four rebounds. Contributing two points apiece were Tieskoetter, Josie Hemesath and Zweibahmer.
