Stepping out of the Upper Iowa Conference, the South Winn boys’ basketball team (9-4, 8-2 UIC) struggled Thursday at Sumner-Fred and came alive in a Saturday battle versus Hudson.
Road struggles
Thursday night, the Warriors took a trip to Sumner-Fred, falling to the Cougars (5-9), 54-38.
South Winn kept pace with S-F in the first, trailing by one (12-11) after the first eight minutes. The second period saw the Warriors struggle as the Cougars stretched their lead to 29-21. Both squads found the basket for eight points in the third, while the fourth quarter once again belonged to the home team.
Trey Kriener and Jacob Herold led the way with 11 points. Kriener provided five rebounds and two assists, while Herold grabbed six boards to go with three assists and three steals. Coming off the bench, Keagen Streeter contributed 10 points and eight caroms.
Saturday afternoon
South Winn put a tally in the win column Saturday, defeating Hudson (1-12) at Wapsie Valley, 50-40.
The Pirates outscored the Warriors 14-11 in the first period. SW rebounded in the second period to make in 21-21 at halftime. The Warriors tacked on 11 in the third to make it 32-24 with eight minutes to play. Hudson staged a big comeback in the fourth, but couldn’t outdo SW to get the win.
“This was a great non-conference win for our guys after a three-game week. I am proud of our guys for continuing to improve from quarter to quarter to get the win in the end and end the week with a W,” said Coach Blake Moen.
Six Warriors lit up the scoreboard offensively, with Herold setting the bar at 14 points, seven rebounds and two steals. Kriener provided nine points, 13 boards, three assists and a pair of steals, while Carson Wenthold finished the day with nine points, six rebounds and three steals. Knocking down eight points was Streeter, followed by Collin Wiltgen’s seven.
