SW grapplers best at Alburnett

The South Winn wrestling team ended last week as the team champion of the Alburnett tournament Saturday, posting a score of 414. The host, Alburnett, was the runner-up with 377, followed by Notre Dame (Burlington) with 375.

The Warriors crowned three champions and placed nine other grapplers in the top three.

At 126 pounds, Ethan Maldonado picked up four falls on his way to an individual title and earned his 100th win of his career. The junior first pinned Kynnick Christofferson of Notre Dame in 35 seconds, then took 18 seconds to roll Iowa Valley’s Karter Thiessen onto his back. In round three, Maldonado threw Dylan Ohrt of Dike-New Hartford in 4:59 to move into the championship bracket against Cascade’s Ty Frasher. He pinned Frasher in 2:36 to advance to the finals where he earned an 11-8 decision over Class 1A No. 8 Brody Neighbor of Alburnett.

Class 1A No. 4 Damon Meyer scored a title at 220 pounds, throwing three opponents and earning a decision. The senior threw teammate Brayden Bodensteiner in 48 seconds in round two to move on against Iowa Valley’s Calvin Huber. In the third round, Meyer tossed Huber to his back in 2:49 and then picked up a fall in 3:22 over Isaac Carpentier of Dike-New Hartford. A 5-0 decision versus Alburnett’s Kolby Morris sealed the title for Meyer.

Ethan Timp was also a champion at 285 pounds, throwing four opposing grapplers. Round two was an eight-second affair as Timp pinned D-NH’s Henry Mussig. It took Timp 3:29 to throw Kodey Miles of Cascade in round three to move into the championship bracket against Mason Olmstead. There Timp pinned Olmstead in 4:26. In the final, the junior picked up a fall over Jacob Leohr of D-NH for the win.

Four other Warriors were in the finals and finished as runners-up including Kaden Bullerman (132), Logan Hageman (170), Sam Conway (182) and Tony Greve (195).
