The mats were packed Saturday in Calmar as the South Winn wrestling team hosted nine other squads at the South Winn Invite, including teams from Nebraska and Minnesota.
Class 2A No. 1 Osage took the team title with 286.5 points, while Class 2A No. 2 West Delaware was second with 185 points. South Winn claimed eighth with 93 points.
“I thought our kids wrestled hard throughout the day. I think we need to continue working on setting ourselves up better for attacks in the neutral position and also focus on wrestling from the bottom position. I was happy with how some of our guys battled back in tough brackets to place once they were beat on the front side. We love hosting this tournament and seeing such a tough group of teams battle it out in our own gym,” said Coach Jacob Elsbernd.
Only one Warrior grappler reached the finals Saturday. Collin Holm finished his day as the runner-up at 138 pounds. In the quarterfinals, the junior picked up a 10-2 major decision over Darren Adams of Osage. In the semifinal, Class 2A No. 3 Nick Koch of North Fayette Valley suffered a shoulder injury during the match and was forced from the mat. In the finals, Holm dropped a 4-2 decision to Cohen Wiste of GMLOS.
Three other wrestlers won bronze including Aiden Feickert (113), Kyle Kuboushek (152) and Kaden Bullerman (160).
South Winn will be at Oelwein Tuesday, Dec. 13, against the Huskies and Anamosa at 6:15 p.m. The Warriors will finish 2022 off at the Dike-New Hartford duals, then enjoy the holiday break.
