SW grapplers go 3-2 at Alburnett

By Becky Walz,

With a big field of tough competition, the South Winn boys’ wrestling team competed in the Alburnett dual tournament Saturday, going 3-2 and finishing third in its pool.
“We had a busy week competing in 10 duals. I am really happy with the way we are competing right now. Our guys are fighting hard and looking for opportunities to score. We have had some great practices in between the competitions and are looking forward to our last week of regular season competition,” said Coach Jacob Elsbernd.
Two Warriors went 5-0 on the day including sophomore Kyle Kuboushek and senior Collin Holm.
Wrestling at 165 pounds, Kuboushek threw Teagen Mast of English Valley in 3:02, then earned a 14-4 major decision over Ian Smith of Iowa Valley. He collected a 7-0 decision over Bridge Anderson of Burlington Notre Dame and a 10-0 decision over Gavin Gerbracht of Dike-New Hartford. The sophomore earned his second major decision of the day 11-1 over Ryder Zdanczewicz of Fennimore (Wis.).
Class 1A No. 3 Collin Holm also had a perfect day with three falls, a decision and a forfeit. Holm needed 57 seconds to pin Karter Thiessen of Iowa Valley, 1:13 to turn Cole Mincer of Burlington Notre Dame and 2:39 to put Jake Reicks of Dike-New Hartford on his back. In his final match, the senior survived Ian Crapp of Fennimore to win 4-2.
The Warriors are at Riceville against the Wildcats, Central Springs and North Butler Tuesday, Jan. 23, at 5:30p.m., and host the Upper Iowa Conference Meet Thursday, Jan. 25, at 4 p.m., in Calmar.
