The South Winn boys wrestling team kicked off the season Tuesday night in a quad against a pair of Class 2A programs and a conference foe, coming away with one dual win. On the mats in Jackson Junction, the Warriors defeated Central Elkader 66-12 and fell to Clear Lake 45-30 and New Hampton/Turkey Valley 52-27.
“I was impressed with how we battled, we had several matches where we were getting beat or in a tight match and we fought hard to get some quality wins. We have a lot to work on and this quad gave us some direction as to where we need to focus some of our attention too. This will be a fun team and it will be interesting to see what we can accomplish this season,” said Coach Jacob Elsbernd.
Against Central Elkader, just three matches took place with Jamison Zweibahmer (120) and Landen Schnuelle (150) each throwing their opponents.
In the Clear Lake match, South Winn collected three wins and three forfeits to score points. At 165 pounds, Kyle Kuboushek pinned Christian Dunning in 3:30, with Quinn Huinker taking an 8-5 decision from Liam Byrnes at 175 pounds. Parker Timp also won at 215 pounds, edging Jake Trenary in a 5-4 decision. Three Warriors also received forfeits —Aiden Feickert (113), Zweibahmer (120) and Collin Holm (144).
Battling the combined New Hampton/Turkey Valley squad, the Warriors picked up five wins on the mat. Gavin Thuente kicked things off at 106 pounds, throwing Quinlan Mahoney in 26 seconds. Feickert followed it up at 113 pounds, putting Ty Moudry on his back in 5:14. Later it was Holm pinning Tate Schwickerath in 1:38 at 144 pounds. Landen Schnuelle turned Ethan Praska in 3:43 for the pin at 150 pounds and Brady Ohrt secured an 8-2 decision over Burke Busta at 157 pounds.
The Warriors will be back on the mats Saturday, Dec. 2, at the Chris Davis Invite hosted by Wapsie Valley at 10 a.m.
