SW grapplers upset Denver, fall to No. 7 West Hancock

By Becky Walz,

The dual season came to an end for the South Winn wrestling team Tuesday night.

The Warriors, ranked No. 15 in the final dual rankings compiled by the Iowa Wrestling Coaches Association and Iowa high School Athletic Association, faced No. 11 Denver in the regional dual semifinals hosted by West Hancock in Britt.

“I am exceptionally proud of the effort from our team. It came down to the very end against Denver and the whole team was able to pull off the first-round upset. We wrestled with that same fight against a tough West Hancock program. Hats off to them and good luck in Des Moines,” said Coach Jacob Elsbernd.

The Warriors edged the Cyclones, 34-33, to advance to face No. 7 West Hancock, ending the season, 42-21. South Winn ends the dual season with a 20-5 record.

South Winn had eight wins versus Denver with the first coming by Zach Taylor at 152 pounds over No. 10 Ben Foelske by a 9-6 decision. Lane Quandahl (160) followed suit with a 5-2 decision over Cole Miller as did Logan Hageman (182) with a 6-5 win over Brennen Graber. At 195 pounds, Tony Greve defeated Beau Bonnette by a 5-2 decision. Picking up the first fall of the dual at 220 pounds was No. 4 Damon Meyer of Cade Bonnette in 3:45. Aiden Feickert (113) threw Max Schwandt in 1:07. With a forfeit given to Brayden Bodensteiner, the Warriors trailed 33-30 with 132-pound Kaden Bullerman left to wrestler. The sophomore gave SW the dual victory, 34-33, with a 10-1 major decision over Josh Terrill.

The Warriors were held off the board against West Hancock until Sam Conway earned an injury time victory over Kale Zuehl at 170 pounds. Feickert survived an 11-10 decision with Luis Sandoval. Throwing Jacob Larson in 3:08, Ethan Maldonado earned points at 126 pounds. Bullerman earned his second win of the night when he threw Derek Oberhelman in 3:48.

Four Warriors will compete at the district meet Saturday, Feb. 13, at 12 p.m., at Clarksville, with the right to go to state on the line. Looking to move on are Ethan Maldonado (126), Logan Hageman (182), Tony Greve (195) and Damon Meyer (220).
