The 2023 season came to an end for the South Winn boys golf team at Fox Ridge Golf Course at the Class 2A District Meet Monday.
In the incredibly strong district that was separated by 37 strokes from top to bottom in the team standings, the Warriors ended their state quest with 333 strokes in eighth place. Advancing to state with a tally of 296 was Grundy Center, along with Hudson who carded a 308.
“We were definitely playing our best golf at the end of the year, and we went down to this meet and the boys represented themselves and our program very well. We, as a staff, couldn’t be prouder of this group of guys. We got strong rounds across the board from everybody on the squad,” said Coach Mike Wenthold.
Junior Jordan Baumler had an incredible day of golf with two eagles, finishing with a 77 for the day (39-38 rounds). Carson Streeter came through with an 83 (43-40), while Carson Wenthold provided an 86 (46-40). Rounding out the Warrior scoring with an 87 (44-43) was Braiden Todd. Carver Wenthold (46-50=96) and Jackson Goltz (52-48=100) were also on the course.
“A lot of people, and rightfully so, will point to the youth on the roster. We had only one senior in this lineup. But not enough can be said about that senior. Carson Wenthold’s career was cut short twice — he missed his entire freshman year to COVID and his entire junior year while rehabbing after surgery. But what a career he had. In the two years he played, he won a lot of medals, was an all-conference performer twice, and a district qualifier twice. That includes an individual sectional title during his sophomore year. Carson was a tremendous leader for this program during the time we had with him, and we’ll miss his presence greatly,” concluded Coach Wenthold.

Class 2A District team results
1. Grundy Center 296; 2. Hudson 308; 3. Columbus Catholic 310; 4. Oelwein 312; 5. Lake Mills 316; 6. Aplington-Parkersburg 325; 7. New Hampton 329; 8. South Winn 333
