The South Winn golf teams split in a UIC dual against MFL Mar Mac despite seeing vast improvement at Tri-City Golf Club in Luana Monday.
The Warrior boys had a 15-stroke improvement from the first time they played at Tri City Golf Course, but still fell the Bulldogs 196 to 162. MFL MarMac swept the medalist honors.
The low man on the squad was senior Martin Horstman with a 45. Shaun Klimesh fired a 47, followed by Jordan Baumler’s 48. The final scorer for the Warriors was Brady Lensing (56). Jacob Bohr (60) and Jackson Goltz (61) were also touring the course for South Winn.
“It was good to see that when the weather finally calms down, we can go out and shoot a more competitive score at a difficult course. Martin Horstman is playing pretty well right now, and we’ll need that to continue. Right now, we just need to focus on us and what we can do to tighten things up with the conference and sectional tournaments just a week away,” said Coach Michael Wenthold.
The South Winn girls scored their lowest team score of the season with a 234 winning over the Bulldogs’ 242. Ruthie Frana and Annie Ondrashek both scored their lowest individual scores of the season with a 54 and 58. This was Ondrashek’s first time breaking 60 for her career. Katrina Hageman also contributed to the win with a 61. Others swinging the clubs for the Lady Warriors were Elizabeth Bohr (61), Julia Carnesi (68) and Brooke Steffans (71).
“Individually, our girls are doing well on different days. Hopefully as we head into our conference tournament and our first round of regionals, we can all be shooting our best and score some low team scores,” stated Coach Glenna Munuswamy.
The Warriors will compete in their final UIC duals this week with a make-up meet at North Fayette Valley tonight (Thursday, May 5) and as hosts of Clayton Ridge Friday, May 6. The boys are at Tri City Golf Course in the Upper Iowa Conference meet Monday, May 9, at 9 a.m., while the girls will host the UIC teams at South Winn Golf and Country Club Tuesday, May 10, at 9 a.m.
