Despite connecting for 16 hits Thursday, the South Winn softball team (8-9, 6-2 UIC) dropped a contest to Class 2A No. 13 Osage (15-2) on the road Thursday night, 14-7.
The Warriors struck for three runs in the opening frame, a tally that was matched by the Green Devils in the bottom half of the frame. Osage added six in the second to take a commanding 9-3 lead. South Winn scratched two more runs across home plate in the fifth and was again countered with two by Osage in the bottom of the inning. Three more runs by Osage in the sixth pushed them ahead 14-5. South Winn looked to rally in the seventh, but couldn’t get more than two runs to score before the game was complete.
Leading the offensive charge for South Winn was Abby Wagner who went 3-for-5 with a home run and double, driving in three runs. Britney Hageman, Morgan Kleve, Isabella Opperman and Izzy Kipp all contributed two hits apiece with Hageman garnering two RBI.
The loss went to Kleve with Eryn Luzum throwing in relief.
South Winn will be at Clayton Ridge Monday, June 20, at 4 p.m., for a varsity doubleheader, then travel again Tuesday, June 21, for a non-conference game at Riceville. The Warriors host Postville Wednesday, June 22, at 5:30 p.m., and Oelwein comes to Calmar Thursday, June 23, at 5:30 p.m. The hectic week continues with Sumner-Fred in Calmar Friday, June 24 at 3:30 p.m., before the Warriors compete in the Decorah tournament Saturday, June 25, at 9 a.m.
