Swimmers dominate invite

By Becky Walz,

The Vikings finished in first place at the Tro-Hawk Swimming & Diving Invitational Saturday, Sept. 11, in Waterloo.
The Decorah girls totaled 415 points on the day, notching six first-place finishes.
“The team had a great day in the pool. We saw a lot of great races and strong finishes,” said Coach Allie Bachelder. “The girls had many in-season time drops which is encouraging based on where we are in our training for the season.”
Julia Alberts, Margaret Rhodes and Grace Bachelder went one-two-three in the 200-yard freestyle event. Paige Werner captured two crowns, besting the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle fields. Rhodes won the 100-yard butterfly, with Emily Voyna coming home a close second. Katerina Kovarik finished first in the 500-yard freestyle. The 400-yard freestyle relay of Werner, Maeley Nefzger, Alberts and Kovarik also won gold.
The Vikes will dive back into competition Thursday, Sept. 16, at 6 p.m., in their only home meet of the season against Waterloo East at the Luther College Natatorium. Saturday, Sept. 18, Decorah will compete at the Iowa City High invite at 8:30 a.m.
