The Decorah girls’ swim and dive season kicked off Thursday night at home versus Mason City.
With a large team, the Vikings put up a good effort against the Mohawks but fell 104 to 82.
The Vikes nearly swept freestyle events. Julia Alberts began the fun with first in the 200-yard freestyle in 2:07.63. Later it was Paige Werner who became a two-time individual champion by winning the 50-yard freestyle and 100-yard freestyle. Werner won the shorter event in 25.71 seconds and touched the wall first in the longer race in 56.91 seconds. In the 200-yard freestyle relay it was Isabella Sailor, Alberts, Katerina Kovarik and Werner combining for a time of 1:46.82 for the gold. In the final event of the night, the 400-yard freestyle relay, Werner, Kovarik, Maeley Nefzger and Alberts edged Mason City with a time of 3:59.52.
Several events took second, including Brinley Krivachek in diving, who has competed at state the last two years, with a score of 211.05 points. Kovarik was the silver medalist in the 200-yard individual medley in 2:27.37. Alberts touched the wall in 1:05.95, to take second in the 100-yard butterfly, while Nefzger was the runner-up in the 100-yard backstroke in 1:09.70.
