Team effort in Viking win over Huskies

By Becky Walz,

The Decorah baseball team (22-5, 15-1 NEIC) had reason to celebrate over the weekend after the total team effort to seize the Northeast Iowa Conference title Friday with an 18-0 win over Oelwein (3-23, 2-14 NEIC) on the road.
“This was another great team effort in which we got a lot of guys the opportunity to contribute, and everyone performed very well. Clinching a conference title with everyone contributing tonight was very special for everyone involved. This senior group of players has contributed to the success of not only baseball, but every activity they are involved in.  It has been an amazing year for Decorah athletics and our students and parents have played a huge part in this success that has occurred,” said Coach Adam Riley.
After getting shut down offensively in the first inning, the Vikings lit up the bats in the second, sending 12 batters to the plate and scoring seven runs. Decorah added to its lead with five in the third and ended the game with six in the fourth on the mercy rule.
Gunnar Steine earned the win on the hill with Drew Snyder throwing in relief.
Decorah scattered 15 hits among 10 different batters with doubles by Noah Storts, Steine and Joseph Hjelle. Going 3-for-4 in the batter’s box was Briggs Duwe with three RBI.
