By Becky Walz,
Mental mistakes were too much for the South Winn football team to overcome on the opening night of the season Friday as the Warriors (0-1) fell to North Fayette Valley (1-0) in West Union 35-6.
“We knew coming in that this was going to be a tough challenge for our young football team. NFV has an outstanding group of seniors and were just on another level,” said Coach Jason Ohrt. “I was proud of how our kids played physically on offense in particular. We moved the ball well and had some nice drives, but we struggled to defend NFV’s team speed. Lukas Weiss played a great game defensively, while Parker Timp and Keagen Streeter both ran very tough on offense.”
How it happened
Things looked good on the opening kick-off as South Winn’s Parker Timp recovered the fumble on NFV’s return; however, the Warriors were stopped in the red zone by the TigerHawk defense. That set up a three-play 51-yard touchdown run by the home team to put the first tally of the night on the board. NFV added another touchdown run from 23 yards out in the first quarter to lead 14-0.
NFV would go on to score another 21 unanswered points in the second and third periods to put the game out of the Warriors’ reach. South Winn would score on the TigerHawks in the fourth on a 10-yard pass from Brady Ohrt to Keagen Streeter for the lone Warrior touchdown of the night.
Numbers
South Winn picked up 199 yards rushing and just 10 passing. North Fayette Valley collected 382 total, with 91 passing and 331 on the ground.
Parker Timp was the workhorse for the Warriors, rushing 23 times for 74 yards. K. Streeter had 53 yards on eight carries and one reception of 10 yards. Ohrt was 1-for-5 in passing and added 33 yards rushing in his eight carries of the pigskin, while Nolan Sabelka scampered 30 yards in his five touches.
On defense, sophomore Lukas Weiss led the way with 6.5 total tackles, including five solo stops, to go with 1.5 tackles for a loss. Timp, K. Streeter and Braiden Todd had three solo stops apiece.
