By Becky Walz,
Mental mistakes were too much for the South Winn football team in a rare Saturday morning game as the Warriors (0-1) fell to North Fayette Valley (1-0) in Calmar, 7-0. Torrential downpours and high winds forced the teams to postpone the game from Friday night to Saturday morning, where the lightning and rain still forced a 30-minute delay.
“Our kids played physical, and we had chances, but NFV held us in key situations. We need to clean up the penalties and finish drives on offense,” said SW coach Jason Ohrt.
The first half was filled with some big plays negated by penalties by both squads as the Warriors and TigerHawks were left scoreless at halftime.
NFV opened the second half with possession of the pigskin, driving it 74 yards which finished with Kaleb White going 46 yards to the house to score the only points of the game with Israel Hernandez converting on the PAT.
The numbers
The Warriors tallied 127 yards of offense to NFV’s 215. On the ground it was Logan Hageman leading the way for SW with 16 carries for 80 yards, while TigerHawk senior Blake Reichter rolled up 70 yards in his 21 touches.
Hageman also led the Red and White with 11.5 total tackles. With a total of six tackles was Keagen Streeter, while Lane Quandahl had five. In on 4.5 tackles was senior Ethan Timp.
On the road
The Warriors will be on the road this week at Maquoketa Valley Friday, Sept. 3, at 7 p.m. NFV will host Sumner-Fredericksburg at 7:30 p.m. this Friday.
