To the max; Vikings battle Western Dubuque in finals

By Becky Walz,

The Decorah volleyball team battled Western Dubuque Tuesday night in the Class 4A regional final.
In the end, it was the top-ranked Bobcats that pulled out the victory, defeating the Vikings 3-0. Set scores were 18-25, 21-25 and 19-25.
“I love this group of girls and I absolutely cannot say enough positive about their effort last night. The atmosphere in that gym was something that we have not been exposed to very often and our girls held their composure, competed and challenged a very good Western Dubuque team until the very end,” said Coach Gina Holthaus.
Western Dubuque (30-3) advanced to the state tournament which will be held Nov. 1-4 at the Alliant Energy PowerHouse in Cedar Rapids.
Decorah ends the season 28-6.
“The seniors this season choose the theme ‘LockedIn’ and I can say with all certainty we were ‘LockedIn’ last night. I am so proud of this group of young ladies I know the lessons learned on the court this year will help them compete at high levels on the court, in the classroom and in life. I want to thank this group of seniors for being great leaders and breaking through a couple barriers (20+ win season and regional final),” said Coach Holthaus.
Chloe Reiser led the team with nine kills and 28 attack attempts, along with 10 digs and 7-for-7 serving mark. Amelia Dugger provided six kills, six digs, two blocks and served 9-for-9. Dahlyn Headington had 15 digs and served 9-for-9, while Haley Gossman added five kills. Mara Holland dished out 24 assists to go with six digs and a 13-for-13 serving effort. Emma Wold went 15-for-16 at the service line and had six digs. Complete stats are available online at www.driftlessjournal.com.
“Thanks to Coach Reckward and Coach Woodhouse for all their support as well as parents and fans who either made the long trip or tuned in online, we appreciate your support. I reminded the girls in the locker room after the game of the quote, ‘Don’t cry because it’s over, smile because it happened!’” concluded Coach Holthaus.
The Vikings will graduate a hefty number of seniors, losing Kallie Mincks, Mara Holland, Kaia Franzen, Sage Wedmann, Annika Franzen, Ashley Schneberger and Ellie Luzum.
