Tricky greens cause problems for Trojans

Elkader Central took full advantage of their home course to eke out a couple of close wins over the Turkey Valley boys’ and girls’ golf team Thursday.
“The greens were extremely tricky with several very tough pin placements. The weather was decent, relatively speaking with cool temps and breezy conditions over the soggy course after the Thursday mid-morning rain,” noted Coach John Reicks.

The Turkey Valley boys lost by a ten-stroke margin, 237 to 227, playing short-handed as only four boys were able to make the trip to Elkader.
The Kurtenbach brothers came within a stroke of sweeping medalist honors. Senior Garrett Kurtenbach was overall medalist with a 46. Meanwhile sophomore Caleb shot a 48 to finish in third place. Central’s Brock Egelseder took home the runner-up medal as he sandwiched a 47 between the Kurtenbach boys.
Trojan journeymen seniors Lance Schmitt and Rolin Schmitt carded a 73 and a 70 respectively for the Trojans.
“I was especially proud of Rolin and Lance Schmitt,” said Coach Reicks. “Rolin gave a great effort to give us the fourth counter we needed to even be able to garner a team score. Meanwhile Lance overcame a tough start to bounce back with a couple of solid holes at the end of his round.”
The TV girls continued to show steady improvement as several girls tied or lowered their previous low rounds of the season as they fell to the Warriors 256 to 235.
Tess Franzen (56), Abby Schmitt (73), Kaitlyn Schroeder (67) and Sofia Rivera (71) all lowered their season averages with their lowest rounds of the season thus far. Freshman phenom Morgan Vsetecka (64) continued her solid play and sophomore Mariah Throndson was consistent as she came in with a 69. Senior leader Tess Franzen won her fifth medal in five tries to place runner-up with a 56.
The Trojans face a busy stretch ahead next week with four meets in five days prior to conference and post-season play the following week. Monday, Turkey Valley hosted Postville and tonight (Tuesday, May 3) the Trojans will swing the clubs versus South Winn in Calmar. Thursday, May 5, TV is at Big Rock Country Club versus West Central and the boys finish the week at Crestwood Friday, May 6.
