Down to wire
From tip-off to the final buzzer, Thursday’s non-conference game versus Riceville (1-8) was a back-and-forth drill with the Trojans fending off the Wildcats, 54-52.
Riceville struck first with a three, only to see it answered by Noah Hanson with a shot behind the arc. A second trey kept the Trojans within arm’s reach of the lead, with TV eventually taking it 14-12 as time ran off the clock in the first period. In the second quarter, the Trojans soon fell behind by as many as six before picking up the pace once again to lead 28-25 at the break.
TV was scoreless for nearly four minutes in the middle of the third period but managed to hold on to the lead, 36-35 with eight minutes left to play. The two squads continued to battle up and down the floor with the score knotted 49-49 with a minute remaining. The Trojans did just enough in the final 60 seconds to pull off the win.
The Trojans were led by Hanson and Caleb Kurtenbach with 16 points apiece. Hanson also provided nine rebounds, seven steals and three assists. Oliver Schmitt put up eight points, while Calvin Bodensteiner added seven points and pulled down 12 boards.
