Trojan boys pound Pirates

By Becky Walz,

Postponed 18 hours due to weather, the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team (10-4, 9-2 UIC) took the court at Postville (1-11, 1-10 UIC) Saturday afternoon, defeating the Pirates, 67-45.

The Trojans got off to a sluggish start with stagnant offense in the first and were left trailing 9-7 after the first eight minutes. In the second period, TV picked up the pace and flipped the switch on the offense to lead 30-17 at halftime. Turkey Valley’s offense continued to click in the third period as it stretched the lead to 50-33.

At halftime the point we made to the team was that the effort was not consistent enough and the communication on the floor was nonexistent,” said Coach Chris Sullivan.

“It was a win and we had some moments in the game, but overall, this was our most inconsistent game of the season. It’s still a win but no excuses to be made, we will watch film and get back to work knowing that we are a much better team than what we showed,” said Coach Sullivan.

Garrett Kurtenbach led TV in scoring with 23 points to accompany six rebounds and three steals. Kalvin Langreck, Calvin Bodensteiner and Dylan Reicks all scored in double figures as well. Kalvin Langreck dished out seven assists to go with his 15 points, while Bodensteiner knocked down 11 points with four boards and three steals. Reicks was in the scorebook with 10 points and eight rebounds.

The Trojans hosted Clayton Ridge Monday, Feb. 9, in a make-up event from Thursday; however, the outcome and statistics were unavailable at press time and will be published in the Decorah Public Opinion Thursday, Feb. 11. TV will host the regular season finale Thursday, Feb. 11, versus Clayton Ridge at 6:15 p.m.
