In a battle between two young neighboring teams, the Turkey Valley girls came out on top of South Winn Tuesday night in Calmar. With stellar defense, the Trojans (1-1, 1-1 UIC) outlasted the Warriors (1-2, 1-1 UIC) for the 42-35 victory.
“It was important for us to get a win to help boost the confidence of this young team,” said Turkey Valley head coach Steve Hoffert. “I thought we really did a good job defending and rebounding, fighting through foul trouble to succeed. As the team our offensive identity will come with it, we are still a work in progress on that end.”
The breakdown
The two squads were evenly matched early on with the Trojans edging the home team 11-9 after the first period. In the second quarter, the TV defense halted the Warrior offense, giving up just two points to lead 20-11 at the break. In the second half, the South Winn offense warmed again, outscoring the visitors and cut the Trojan lead to three with 37 ticks remaining on the clock. But it was too little too late as TV came out on top.
“We played extremely hard and fought until the end. We overcame a big fourth quarter deficit and fought back to cut it to a three-point game, but we just couldn’t get over the hump to tie the game,” noted SW head coach Justin Izer.
Numbers for both
Layni Schuchhardt led the way for the Trojans with 10 points and seven rebounds, along with dishing out four assists. Just missing double digits with nine points way Haylee Hanson who also pulled down seven boards. Annika Bodensteineter contributed seven points and seven boards, while Addison Steinlage led the way with seven assists and three steals.
For the Warriors it was Loleta Ryan on top of the scoring chart with 10 points and four steals. Ella Theis dropped in eight points to aid in the effort. Grabbing 10 rebounds was Aubrey Willey.
