The Turkey Valley golf teams got the 2021 season underway versus Tripoli at Jackson Heights Golf Course Tuesday, April 13, in less-than-ideal conditions. On a brutal night where temperatures were in the low 40s and northwest wind gusts up to 20 mph, the Trojans fell short.
The boys dropped the meet to Tripoli, 238 to 231, while the girls finished the night with 260 to the Panther’s 224.
“The weather was the key story. I am sure we’ve played in worse conditions, but as the saying goes, ‘I can’t remember when,’” said Coach John Reicks. “There were lots of cold hands and feet, but very little complaining. I think the kids were just happy for the opportunity they missed out on last spring due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I look for our scores to go down as the weather heats up later in the month.”
Oh, so close
Junior Garrett Kurtenbach fired a 52 to lead the Trojans. G. Kurtenbach was off his game slightly, losing several penalty strokes off the tee. Caleb Kurtenbach did well in his varsity debut as he shot a 59. Junior Lance Schmitt carded a career low 62 and newcomers Braylen Byrne (65), Cael Wickham (69) and Nelson Reicks (70) rounded out the Trojan scorecard.
Girls’ action
Senior Ali Hoffert led the Lady Trojans with a solid 56, just two strokes away from medalist honors in her first competitive round of golf since her freshman year.
Coming in with a 63 was fellow senior Emma Hanson while junior Tess Franzen fired a 67. Promising freshman Mariah Throndson (74), Megan Blong (84) and Bella Gruenberg (85) also toured the Jackson Heights course.
