Trojans advance to round two

By Becky Walz,

Opening the postseason at home, the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (17-5) flew past Dunkerton (9-12), 76-28. It marks the team scoring the fourth-most points in a single game as Ali Hoffert also broke the made field goals record with 17. The previous record was held by Chyanne Kleve at 15 in both 1999 and 2000.

Fueled by forcing turnovers for easy baskets, the Trojans jumped out to a 33-10 lead following the first eight minutes. The second period was an entirely different story as TV was held to Jaycie Byrne’s two points, allowing Dunkerton to close the gap to 15 points, 35-20.

TV got back on track in the second half, spurred on by Ali Hoffert’s 16 points as the Red and White tallied a 59-25 lead with eight minutes remaining. With continuous clock kicked in at the start of the final period, the Raiders’ fate was sealed as the Trojans put reserves on the floor to finish the game.

“Our half-court defense faltered late in the second as we didn’t close out well on the perimeter and failed to contest an end of the half buzzer beater that Dunkerton converted on to close the gap to 15 points,” said Coach Carla Nymeyer. “Overall, everyone did a nice job of playing together and finding each other. Ali (Hoffert) attacked the rim well and I like how Kylie (Wurzer) stepped up to make some nice offensive plays for us.”

Leading the offensive charge for TV with 34 points was Ali Hoffert to accompany eight rebounds, five steals and four assists. Also, in double figures was Jaycie Byrne with 11 points, seven steals and five assists. Kara Reicks added nine points and five steals to the stat book, while Jacqlyn Schmitt provided nine points and six boards.

The Trojans enter the quarterfinals today (Tuesday, Feb. 16) at home versus Central City at 7 p.m. The winner of the quarterfinals goes on to the regional semifinals Friday, Feb. 19, in Jackson Junction against either Kee High or East Buchanan.
