By Becky Walz,
On the road Thursday, the Turkey Valley baseball team (3-1, 3-1 UIC) picked up a pair of wins Thursday over North Fayette Valley (0-4, 0-2 UIC).
Just like Tuesday’s opening day game versus Kee, Thursday’s game one took an extra inning for a winner to be declared. Carson Busta led off the game with a double and scored on Noah Hanson’s double. The Trojans’ third double of the first frame by Caleb Kurtenbach gave the visitors an early 3-0 lead. NFV closed the gap in the bottom half of the first inning with two and took the lead with another pair of runs in the second. An Aidan Holthaus single in the third drove in Garrett Dietzenbach to tie the score 4-4; however, the TigerHawks responded with one of their own in the bottom of the frame. After scoreless fourth and fifth frames by both squads, TV took advantage of an Oliver Schmitt single to score C. Busta and Hanson and take a 6-5 lead. NFV knotted the score in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings. Hanson’s single in the eighth set up the TV win with a stolen base and wild pitch to advance him to third. Calvin Bodensteiner came through with a single to score the go-ahead run. In the bottom of the eighth, TV pitcher Schmitt sat NFV down in order to earn the win, 7-6.
In game two, the Trojans picked up their first two runs by C. Busta in the first and third frames, then scored twice in the fourth to lead, 4-0. NFV put two tallies on the board in the bottom of the fourth to narrow TV’s advantage. The Red and White responded with one in the sixth. The TigerHawks challenged the visitors in the sixth with three runs to make it 5-5. Singles by Schmitt and Dietzenbach, combined with and Russell Nieman double, pushed TV out front, 8-5, with NFV going down 1-2-3 in the bottom of the seventh, giving the Trojans the win, 8-5.
Due to the Memorial Day holiday, the Driftless Journal was printed early and the Trojans’ non-conference game at New Hampton Saturday will be reported on in the June 1 Public Opinion. Turkey Valley will host Clayton Ridge in a UIC twinbill Tuesday, May 30, then will have Wapsie Valley in town Wednesday, May 31, and Postville Thursday, June 1. All three home games at scheduled for the first varsity pitch at 4 p.m.
