Having split games during the regular portion of the season, the Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team (12-10) shocked Clayton Ridge (16-6) Monday 43-41, at the neutral site at Wapsie Valley.
The Trojans will now play at Wapsie Valley again versus the host Warriors (16-5) Thursday, Feb. 17, at 7 p.m.
The first-round game started off with a 14-12 Trojan lead at the end of the opening period. After neither team scored in the first two minutes, the Eagles knotted the score at 14, before ending the second quarter with 13 points and a 25-19 advantage.
TV dug into the lead in the third period, finishing on a 7-0 run to cut the advantage to 31-30 with eight minutes to play. Keeping the Eagles from scoring in the first minute of the fourth, TV fell even with Clayton Ridge at 32 with 6:00 remaining. The Trojans were sent to the charity stripe repeatedly, hitting enough free throws to take a five-point lead with four minutes to play and holding on for the slim victory.
Dylan Reicks led the Trojans with 12 points and 15 rebounds, while fellow senior Garrett Kurtenbach knocked down 12 points to go with four boards and four steals. Also in double figures with 10 points was Noah Hanson, along with six rebounds. Calvin Bodensteiner was solid under the basketball with eight boards.
“Oliver Schmitt came off the bench with not a lot of stats, but stayed on the court playing great defense and that was a big reason for the win was his defense. We got the boys to believe, they did and we got it done,” said Coach John Izer.
