Trojans can’t hold against Waukon

By Ian Wreisner

Turkey Valley (5-8, 5-2 UIC) was able to hold on but couldn’t get a solid grip against Waukon (7-5, 2-4 NEIC) at this past Thursday’s home game. The Trojans didn’t give up any runs in the first frame, but five Indian runs in the second set the tone for the rest of the game, which ended 15-8.
“We got some quality pitching innings out of a couple of young pitchers,” said TV Coach Dan Stepan about freshmen Russell Nieman and Caleb Kurtenbach.
Nieman held strong and his fielders kept Waukon off the bases in the first, but a slew of hits from Waukon and some errors at second base let five runs through in the second.
TV responded with three of their own in the third, including a homerun from Garrett Kurtenbach to rally his team. That caught the attention of Lincoln Snitker, who hit his own dinger for Waukon in the top of the fourth, with the Indians scoring five other runs which helped to take a decisive lead.
After letting up one run in the fifth, the Trojans were able to restrain Waukon once again in the sixth, with no runs getting through from either team.
Waukon’s Snitker hit yet another home run at the top of the seventh. TV put an end to Waukon’s scoring streak when Noah Hanson tagged out Jaden Hager on his way to second, but not before three more runs were plated.
It was TV’s time to catch up in the bottom of the seventh, scoring five runs with just one hit due to some wild pitches and walks from the mound. Two tagged bases and a fly ball ended the game before they could overtake Waukon, ending the game at 15-8.
