In a highly anticipated regular season finale in Calmar, the Turkey Valley volleyball team (17-15, 7-1 UIC) secured a conference championship with the 3-0 win over South Winn (10-18, 6-2 UIC).
The Warriors finished outright third in the league with a record of 6-2 with their only other loss to Clayton Ridge who splits the title with Turkey Valley.
In front of a packed house, it was a back-and-forth opening set in which the Warriors had two shots at game point but couldn’t prevail before the Trojans took set one 26-24 that ended on an ace serve by Brianna Busta. Set two was spearheaded by a seven-serve Busta run and once again ended with her serving an ace for the Trojans for the 25-10 win. In the final set, the Trojan offense remained hot, along with the serving runs to claim the win by 25-10 again.
“Our players were very appreciative of the support we had at all our home matches, and this one was more special with it being our Dig Pink night and raising over $2000 for the Winneshiek County Celebration of Life. Although we didn’t get it done like we hoped in the win/loss column, we were in a position to play for a conference championship and that is a big step in the process for the program. Turkey Valley volleyball has been a top contender in our conference for several years in a row and I congratulate them on another great year in the league,” said South Winn coach Alex Smith.
Numbers
Busta’s stats show what an impact she had on the win as she was 26-for-26 at the service line with two aces, along with eight kills and 10 digs. Adriana Tiedt led the Trojans with 10 kills and provided 14 digs while serving 9-for-10. Maici Weber had 23 assists, eight digs and was 10-for-12 at the service line.
The Warriors were paced by Katrina Hageman with nine kills and 12 digs. Morgan Kleve provided four kills and was 10-for-11 at the service line, while Avery Humpal, Abby Wagner and Ivey Franzen had three kills apiece. Avery Luzum dished out 10 assists and Morgan Kriener had 13 digs.
