The Turkey Valley Trojans claimed the UIC girls’ golf championship on Tuesday, May 11 at the Tri-City Golf and CC near Luana, surviving a grueling 18-hole test. It was 2008 when TV last won the conference golf title under the coaching of Bob Huinker.
The Lady Trojans’ winning total of 457 defeated runner-up North Fayette Valley by 22 strokes. Clayton Ridge was third with a 479 total. With 486 total strokes in fourth place was South Winn.
South Winn senior Sydney Becker was the medalist, winning the day with a 101. Runner-up was Clayton Ridge’s Savannah Meyer who carded a 104.
The top 15 place winners earn all-conference honors.

Champs
Four Trojans earned medals on the day, led by senior Ali Hoffert (51-56-107) who placed third. Fellow senior Kylie Wurzer took a day off from track to fashion a 110 (54-56), placing her fourth. Tess Franzen (63-51-114) was seventh after coming back from a bruising 15 on hole No. 2, which she went out-of-bounds on three times. Senior Raegan Kime (67-59-126) finished in 15th place.
Senior Emma Hanson (61-69-130) placed 21st and freshman Mariah Throndson (70-70-140) completed the Trojans competitors in 31st place.
“To say I was very proud of the way our girls played today would be a huge understatement,” said TV Coach John Reicks. “First, I need to give credit to four 2020 graduates that had their senior golf season taken away due to COVID-19 last year. Marissa Muetherthies, Jaedyn Winter, Rachelle Smith and Savannah Schmitt laid the groundwork for this 2021 UIC golf championship. I truly believe that they would have been very serious contenders for a conference title as well in 2020 prior to the pandemic.”

Solid day
Aside from Becker who won the course with rounds of 50 and 51 for a total of 101, South Winn had five other golfers on the course. Katrina Hageman (60-67) and Ruthie Frana (61-66) just missed All-Conference honors as the pair tied at 127 strokes in 16th place. Brooke Steffans (64-67) came through for the Warriors’ final tally in 23rd place with a score of 131.
Hannah Pahl (86-83-169) and Annisten Ondrashek (90-92-182) also toured the course for South Winn.

Regionals Monday
Next up for the women is the Class 1A regional tournament. Both South Winn and Turkey Valley are in Class 1A and will be back at Tri-City Golf Club Monday, May 17.
