Hosting MFL MarMac, the Turkey Valley girls’ basketball team (6-4, 5-3 UIC) put every ounce of effort in Tuesday’s game, but came up short as the Bulldogs (9-4, 9-0 UIC) defeated the Trojans 49-44.
“It was a fantastic effort by our girls. We executed well on both sides of the ball, and this was one of our better rebounding performances. Our bench gave us some great minutes when we got in foul trouble — and we kept our heads in the game mentally versus shutting down when we had to sit,” said Coach Carla Nymeyer.
From tip-off to final buzzer Tuesday’s game was a back-and-forth battle between the Trojans and Bulldogs with TV leading 14-11 after the opening period. Both teams went cold to start the second period with neither scoring in the first two minutes. Brianna Busta lifted the Trojans to the lead 18-17 at halftime with a shot at the buzzer.
In the second half, the Bulldogs pulled out from by as many at 4, but TV pulled back within one, 27-28, with eight minutes to play. The momentum stayed with MFL MarMac as the visitors stretched the lead to 40-32 with 3:44 to play. A Kara Reicks trey on an in-bounds play with 1:29 left, put the difference at one possession, 39-42, but the comeback wasn’t meant to be.
Jacqlyn Schmitt provided 10 points and six rebounds in the Trojan’s effort. Aubrey Hoffert added six points, while Jalyssa Blazek had seven to go with six rebounds, four assists and three steals. Kara Reicks also had seven points, along with three rebounds.
