Trojans finish postseason at Ed-Co

By Becky Walz,

The Turkey Valley boys’ basketball team ran into a quick, experienced team in the quarterfinal round of the Class 1A playoffs Thursday night, falling to Ed-Co, 72-52, in Edgewood.

“We knew coming into the game that we were going up against a very tough Ed-Co team who is relentless on the defensive end and traps continuously for 32 minutes. Even when you know something is coming you replicate it in practice a bunch but can never simulate it as good as the team you’re facing,” said Coach Chris Sullivan.

The Trojans end the year 14-7. Ed-Co takes a 17-5 record against South Winn today, Tuesday, Feb. 23, At Elkader.

Falling behind early, TV was within one, 11-10 with 2:07 to play in the first quarter, before Ed-Co nailed a late trey to take a 14-10 lead into the second period. There, the Trojans gave up the first six points of the period before Garrett Kurtenbach sent a pair of treys sailing through the net. Through the remainder of the quarter, TV kept the score close. The score at the half was 32-25 in favor of Ed-Co. The Vikings extended their lead to 55-40 in the third frame and outscored the Red and White 17-12 in the final period. All 12 of the Trojans’ points were scored by senior Kalvin Langreck.

Five Trojans scored with Langreck leading the way with 29 points. Garrett Kurtenbach provided 10 points, four rebounds and four steals for TV. Calvin Bodensteiner had six points, two boards and two assists, while Noah Hanson added five points, three rebounds and six assists. Scoring two points and leading TV under the basket with five boards was Dylan Reicks.

“Even though we came out on the wrong end tonight that doesn’t take away from how hard our kids fought tonight and how hard they played all season. This group brought it every day in practice and left it all on the floor again last night and we are super proud of each and every one of them,” said Coach Sullivan. Coming into the season we had little experience back and a lot of people wrote this team off, but we told them that the outside critics don’t mean anything and it’s what we do in practice each day to get better as a team and believing in the process and they bought into that concept.

The Trojans will be a more veteran squad next year, as Kalvin Langreck is the lone senior to graduate.
