Trojans host triangular, finish in middle

The Turkey Valley Trojans hosted New Hampton and Sumner-Fred in boys’ golf on Friday, April 16, at Jackson Heights. The Trojans split as the Chickasaws won with a 177, followed by TV with a 211, and the Cougars placed third with a 225.
“It was fun playing two teams with a rich and storied tradition as the Chickasaws and the Cougars,” said Coach John Reicks. “New Hampton’s Coach Bill Glenn, one of the best coaches in the state, has a very young team this year and already he has his kids playing at a very high level. The Chickasaws will be very fun to watch over the next few years. It was a great experience for my guys to play such a quality opponent. Hopefully the Trojans learned something tonight and will use that information going forward.”
Trojan junior Garrett Kurtenbach fired a blistering even 40 to earn his second medalist honors of the year. Cam Josephson of the Chicksaws placed second, just two strokes back with a 42. Kurtenbach’s gold-medal performance was highlighted by a great chip on Hole No. 7 to salvage a bogey before sticking his tee shot on the short par three Hole No. 8 within 10 feet. He then calmly drained the tricky putt for a birdie to cap off his career low score.
Junior Brody Hackman shot a solid bounce-back 54, while junior Jackson Vsetecka (58) and senior dual sport star Kalvin Langreck shot a 59 in his first action of the year to round out the Trojan scorecard.
Turkey Valley sophomore Calvin Bodensteiner, playing JV in also his first meet of the year, turned some heads as he shot a 43 to win the junior varsity competition.
