By Becky Walz,
The Turkey Valley (4-1, 3-0) is in the driver’s seat in the district after defeating Clarksville (3-3, 1-2) Friday night on the road, 44-34.
The Trojans currently are tied with Tripoli for the top spot with both undefeated in district play.
“This was a good road win. Clarksville has a very good chance of being a playoff team. Offensively we moved the ball consistently the entire game. Two big penalties killed two drives and a fumble killed the only other drive we didn’t score on. Defensively we ran to the ball all night. Oliver Schmitt had a great game on offense and also on defense, sealing the victory with a late interception,” said Coach Mark Scott.
Surviving the Indians
Clarksville ate up nearly five minutes of the first quarter after receiving the opening kickoff that resulted in turning the ball over on downs to the Trojans. The two teams exchanged possession on downs several times throughout the first quarter including the Indians on the Trojan 9-yard line with 1:45 left in the first.
A 42-yard burst of energy from Carson Busta put Turkey Valley in the end zone on the opening play of the first quarter. Carrying the ball for the 2-point conversion, Noah Hanson gave the Trojans the early 8-0 lead. Clarksville countered with a reverse play with 10:08 on the clock for an Indian touchdown to knot the score 8-8. Oliver Schmitt later got his name called as the pigskin sat on the Indian 1-yard line for the Trojans’ second TD of the game giving TV a 14-8 lead. Once again the home team responded and converted on a two-point conversion to take the lead 16-14. However, the Trojans weren’t done as Hanson connected with Chase Hayek on a 38-yard pass, setting up O. Schmitt’s second TD run of the quarter from the two-yard line and a 22-16 halftime Trojan lead.
Picking up where he left off, O. Schmitt carried the pigskin 60 yards on the Trojans’ first offensive play of the second half to score once again for a 28-16 advantage with 11:46 on the clock. On the run the entire time, the Indians went the length of the field, gaining penalty yards on Trojan penalties to narrow the margin with another score to 28-24.
It all came down to the final period as a long Hanson run led to O. Schmitt’s fourth touchdown run of the game from six yards out with 9:08 left to play. The Trojan defense held Clarksville’s advances, taking over possession at midfield with 7:34 left to play. That led to Hanson’s 7-yard dart across the goal line and a 44-24 Trojan lead with 3:44 left. Not to be outdone, Clarksville added a long run and touchdown with 1:56 left to make it 44-32. Burke Busta covered the attempted Indian onside kick at the Trojan 38-yard line. A personal foul on TV left them facing a 3rd and 21 with 1:41 remaining and saw Hanson get sacked, forcing the Trojans to punt. Desperate to make a big play, the Indians decided to air it out leading to O. Schmitt’s timely interception with 55 seconds remaining to end the game.
The Trojans picked up 343 yards rushing and 62 passing.
O. Schmitt carried the ball 22 times for 174 yards, a 7.9 yards per carry average. C. Busta had 87 yards on 10 attempts, while Hanson had 80 yards in 11 carries. Hanson completed four passes, including two to Hayek for 52 yards.
Troy Schmitt and O. Schmitt led the defense with seven solo tackles apiece, while Hayek was there for four solo stops.
On the line
The Trojans go on the road Friday against Tripoli (5-1, 4-0) to see who will come out of the district in the top spot.
