Trojans knock off Central 3-0 in UIC finale

Wrapping up the regular 2021 season on the road, the Turkey Valley volleyball team (16-15, 6-2 UIC) returned home from Elkader after taking a three-set victory from Central Elkader (10-28, 1-6) UIC). Set scores were 25-14, 25-23 and 25-15.
The team produced 30 kills, 103 attack attempts, 28 assists, 51 digs, four total blocks and served 58-for-79 with 11 aces.
Olivia Drilling pounded nine kills with 19 attack attempts, while Brianna Busta was close behind with seven kills on 12 attack attempts to go with a solo block. Josie Weber led the team with 25 assists, 11 digs and served 10-for-12. Clare Courtney also had 11 digs and was 7-for-7 at the service line. Kourtney Schmidt had a serving mark of 16-for-23, producing five ace serves to go with four kills and five digs. Adriana Tiedt hammered five kills and picked up eight digs while serving 11-for-17 with four aces.
“What a good finish to the season with a win in three sets over Central,” said Co-Coaches Tammy Vrzak and Jackie Novotny. “Our middle hitters — Olivia Drilling and Brianna Busta — had a great night at the net. They are really working well as a team which is where we want to be at this point of the season.”

Final push
Turkey Valley hosted Kee in the first round of Class 1A Region 5 action Monday night. Results of the match were unavailable at press time; however, if the Trojans won, they will be back on the court Wednesday, Oct. 20, at 7 p.m., competing in the regional quarterfinal versus either Saint Ansgar or Northwood-Kensett.
