By Becky Walz,
It wasn’t just a win for the Turkey Valley football team (7-0, 5-0) Friday night, it was also the game that clinched the top seed in the district. Hosting Tripoli (4-3, 3-2), the Trojan offensive line dominated the line of scrimmage to give the Red and White the 46-12 victory.
“We played well again,” praised Coach Mark Scott. “On defense we held them out of the end zone until we gave up two big plays late in the game. Considering each team only punted once and they only turned it over once, our defense did a great job of not letting them score.”
Bang, bang, bang
The Trojans launched their attack early marching down the field for a trio of touchdowns in the first quarter, two coming from Marcus Herold from inside the red zone. Noah Hanson tacked on a 20-yard run to put TV ahead 22-0 after the opening frame. In the second period, Herold added his third TD of the game on a three-yard dive into the end zone, allowing the Trojans to hold a 30-0 halftime lead.
In the second half it was more of the TV skillfulness with a pair of touchdown runs — a four-yard dash by Dylan Reicks and a five-yard dash by Herold. It was late in the third period before Tripoli broke away for a 61-yard touchdown. The Panthers doubled their tally in the fourth with a 48-yard pass, but could not make up the difference, allowing TV to remain undefeated.
Individually
The two squads squared away nearly even with the Trojans rolling up 283 yards of offense, while Tripoli tallied 289.
Herold once again piloted the ground game with 131 yards in 16 carries for four TDs. Hanson directed the offense with seven carries for 64 yards and completed 2-for-4 passes. Also carrying the ball for TV was Dylan Reicks for 35 yards, Oliver Schmitt for 23 yards and Carson Busta for seven yards.
On defense, Herold drug down players for 10.5 tackles. In for a total of six tackles apiece were Oliver Schmitt and Garrett Kurtenbach. Dylan Reicks added 5.5, while C. Busta had four. Ryan Franzen hauled in a tipped pass for an interception for a 10-yard return to go with 3.5 total stops.
One last tune-up
The Trojans travel to Maynard to take on West Central Friday, Oct. 15, at 7 p.m.
