By Becky Walz,
Although the score doesn’t indicate it, the Turkey Valley football team (4-0, 2-0) faced a battle Friday night. The Riceville Wildcats gave the Trojans a hard time, but so did the officials as TV compiled nearly 20 penalties for 150 yards.
“Our own mistakes hurt us the most,” said Coach Mark Scott. “Defensively we continued to dominate the line of scrimmage and our DBs did a great job of not giving up many big plays. Offensively we only punted once and that was early in the game. We did turn the ball over twice and had several loose balls that we recovered but cost us yardage.”
Getting in the end zone
The Trojans scored just eight points in the first quarter with a 10-yard pass from Noah Hanson to Garrett Kurtenbach. Marcus Herold completed the two-point try to put TV up 8-0.
The offense got rolling in the second frame. Hanson scored on a one-yard run and later added a seven-yard dash to the end zone. The two Trojan scores sandwiched Wildcats’ one and only touchdown on a one-yard quarterback sneak.
Leading 22-8 at the break, TV added three more scores in the second half, with a Dylan Reicks 23-yard reception from Hanson, a Herold nine-yard burst and an Oliver Schmitt nine-yard jaunt.
Positives
The Trojans rushed for 196 yards and passed for another 196, while holding the Wildcats to 150 yards, all coming through the air.
Hanson completed 10-of-17 passes for 180 yards. Dylan Reicks caught four for 86 yards, while Garrett Kurtenbach hauled in three receptions for 49 yards. On the ground, Marcus Herold carried the ball 16 times for 72 yards. Hanson was a dual threat with 14 carries for 49 yards.
On defense, Dylan Reicks had seven total tackles, while Ryan Franzen had 5.5 takedowns. Coming through with five total tackles apiece were Carson Busta, Herold and Calvin Bodensteiner.
Another win?
The Trojans will be back on the road Friday, Sept. 24. It pits the two unbeaten squads of the district against each other for the lead with TV at Janesville at 7 p.m.
