After splitting in the regular season, Turkey Valley and Kee faced off in the Class 1A District 6 quarterfinals Monday, with the Trojans winning the rubber match, 60-52.
“We threw a junk defense at Kee High and the kids did a great job of containing their two best players and we forced other guys to have to knock down shots and make plays who weren’t comfortable doing so,” said Coach Chris Sullivan.
With the win, Turkey Valley (14-6) advances to face Ed-Co (16-5) in the Class 1A District 6 semifinals today, Thursday, Feb. 18, at 7 p.m. at Edgewood. On the other side of the bracket, South Winn (15-6) faces Wapsie Valley (17-4) at 7 p.m. at Wapsie Valley. The district final is Tuesday, Feb. 23, at 7 p.m. at a site to be determined.
At the end of the first quarter was the only time the fans would see TV trail, 16-15. After Kee hit the opening shot of the second period, the Trojans went on a 9-0 run, to take a 24-18 lead with 3:53 remaining before the half. The Red and White held onto the advantage as time ran out, 29-22.
Pulling ahead by as many as nine just under 6:00 left in the third, the Trojans saw the lead evaporate to 33-32, as the Hawks connected on basket after basket. Ballooning the lead back to nine with 1:37 remaining in the period, TV once again watch its lead disappear to 43-43 with eight minutes left to play.
Back on the floor with four fouls, Kalvin Langreck spearheaded the offensive attack, hitting three of the Trojans’ five shots to propel TV out front 54-45 with 2:59 left to play. All Kee had left to do was foul and hope TV would miss their free throws as the Hawks got the lead down to 56-50; however, the home team held on for the win.
Garrett Kurtenbach had a huge night for TV with 20 points and 15 rebounds, while Langreck finished the game with 13 points. Also in double figures was Calvin Bodensteiner with 11 points and four boards. Dylan Reicks battled all over the floor for seven points and six rebounds. Adding five points, three boards, three assists and four steals was Noah Hanson.
