Trojan’s sprint medley leads the way at state meet

By Becky Walz,

The season came to a close for the Turkey Valley track teams as the Trojans sent 10 events to the State Track Meet in Des Moines over the weekend.
In Class 1A, Madrid swept the team titles with the girls earning 51 points and boys claiming 65.5 points. The TV girls finished the weekend with 22 points in eighth place, while the boys’ failed to secure points.
“I couldn’t be prouder of my girls and the effort that was given during the state meet this weekend. We maybe didn’t finish as high as we wanted to in some events but we still took home medals in three relays and one individual event. In Class 1A, there are 140 schools and Turkey Valley is on the smaller end of this class. Placing 8th overall is quite the accomplishment and not something that any of my athletes should be hanging their head at,” said TV girls’ coach Dalton Hackman.

Scoring for the girls
The Turkey Valley girls put up 22 points, thanks to junior Jalyssa Blazek who qualified for four events and brought home hardware in all four.
Getting the first points Thursday for TV was the girls’ 4×800 relay. Josie Weber, Jaycie Byrne, Cambree Kruse and Blazek posted a time of 10:08.13, good for fifth overall.
In the only other event for the girls Thursday, sophomore Olivia Snyder competed in the 100-meter dash prelims, earning 18th in 13.42 seconds.
Friday started with the Trojans competing in the distance medley relay. Kara Reicks, Weber, Byrne and Blazek carried the baton around the oval in 4:18.48, good for fifth and a new school record.
TV fans also saw Clare Courtney, Weber, Snyder and Byrne race around the track in the 4×200 Friday in a time of 1:53.68 to earn 21st place.
Later in the night TV’s 4×100 combined for a time of 53.58 seconds in 22nd place. Members of the team were Reicks, Snyder, Clare Courtney and Kylie Wurzer.
During Saturday’s session it was the sprint medley relay making some noise with a silver place finish. Reicks, Courtney, Snyder and Blazek ran the race in 1:52.32, falling just short of their own school record set at the state-qualifying meet.
Blazek wasn’t done yet as she competed in the 800-meter run, placing third in 2:20.32. In the process she broke the previous school record, 2:21.41, set in 2001 by Elizabeth Hageman.
“I couldn’t be more impressed with Jalyssa. She has one more year left and you can bet that her goals will be set even higher and she will be on a mission down at the state meet next year. Look for big things out of this incredible athlete in the future,” noted Coach Hackman.

Trojan boys
The Turkey Valley boys had three events at the Blue Oval.
In started Thursday with the 4×800 relay. Chase Hayek, Noah Hanson, Dylan Reicks and Kalvin Langreck took 15th place in 8:39.92.
Friday it was the distance medley’s turn to compete. Marcus Herold, Hayek, Langreck and Hanson combined their efforts to the time of 3:45.06, good for 12th place.
The weekend ended with the sprint medley quartet of Carson Busta, Herold, Hanson and Langreck competing Saturday afternoon. Posting a time of 1:39.05, the Trojans finished 21st.
