The Turkey Valley softball team (7-12, 6-2 UIC) picked up a pair of conference wins Wednesday night over Central Elkader in Jackson Junction, then went 1-2 in games at the New Hampton tournament Saturday.
Clean sweep
Playing a UIC doubleheader at home Wednesday the Trojans swept Central Elkader (3-12, 2-6 UIC) in a pair of close contests, 12-11 and 6-5.
The first game started off with Central getting out to an early 3-1 lead. However, Turkey Valley’s freshman pitcher Maici Weber hit a game-tying three-run home run over the left field fence, bringing the score to 4-4. Over the next three innings, the two teams scored a combined 14 runs, along with two lead changes and a tie, bringing the score to 11 runs apiece. Turkey Valley ended up shutting out the Warriors at the top of the seventh inning, giving the Trojans a chance at ending the game with just a single run. At the bottom of the seventh inning, senior second baseman Alison Leibold made just enough contact with a pitch that senior third baseman Olivia Snyder was able to score the game winning run.
The second game started off with a bang for the Turkey Valley. At the end of the first three innings, the Trojans were up by a score of 5-1. The fifth run that the Trojans scored was a solo shot over the left field fence that was hit by senior centerfielder Clare Courtney. At the top of the sixth inning, Central scored three runs, bringing the Warriors within just one run of the Trojans. At the top of the seventh inning, the Warriors scored just one run, which tied the game, but it allowed the Trojans to get their second walk-off hit of the night by scoring just one run. Sure enough, that is exactly what happened. At the bottom of the seventh inning, Courtney hit a ball between the gap between the shortstop and the third baseman, resulting in the game winning run, which was scored by freshman M. Weber.
Halle Weber was the winning pitcher in both contests.
