The Turkey Valley golf teams endured strong winds and cold temperatures Monday and Tuesday as the hit the links with MFL MarMac. Tuesday the girls were back on the course versus Crestwood.
Harsh elements
“For the most part the kids did a good job of battling the elements – Monday night temps were 37 degrees, a windchill around 30 degrees and northwest winds of 15-25 mph,” pointed out Coach John Reicks.
According to Coach Reicks, MFL MarMac has a very strong boys’ team this year and won 181 to 251.
“I was disappointed with our boys’ play. We need to be more mentally tough and make better decisions regarding course management and club selection. Just survive the holes that play against the wind and take advantage of holes that go with the wind. And dress for the weather as well,” said Coach Reicks. “The weather conditions were the same for both teams. The Bulldogs just executed their shots much better than we did.”
Sophomore Caleb Kurtenbach (61), Brody Hackman (65), and Lance Schmitt (70) also counted for the Trojans.
The Lady Trojans dropped another close one, this time by a three-stroke margin, 271 to 274.
“I was very proud of all our girls as they showed a lot of grit and determination,” noted Coach Reicks.
Senior Tess Franzen was the meet medalist once again with a 57. Morgan Vsetecka (67), Mariah Throndson (73), and Alison Leibold (77) also counted for the Lady Trojans. Abby Schmitt (78) and Sofia Rivera (82) also toured the course on the brisk, chilly afternoon.
Girls only
Turkey Valley hosted Crestwood in a girls’ only golf meet Tuesday night at Jackson Heights with the Lady Trojans dropping a 13 stroke decision to the Cadets 256 to 243.
Senior Tess Franzen carded a 56 to earn her fourth straight medal on the season as she finished as the meet runner-up. Crestwood’s Camaron Moellers was the overall medalist with a 51.
Trojan freshman Morgan Vsetecka (59) shot her first ever below 60 round, and sophomore Mariah Throndson (66) and Abby Schmitt (75) also counted for Turkey Valley. Junior newcomer Alison Leibold toured the course and came in with a 77 on the night.
