Trojans take two from WarEagles

By Becky Walz,

The Turkey Valley baseball team (2-3, 2-0 UIC) put two tallies in the win column Tuesday, after falling twice at the New Hampton tournament Saturday.

UIC opener
Getting to play at home for the first time this season, the Trojans found ways to plate runs they needed to sweep Clayton Ridge/Central, 11-5 and 4-3.
“It was good to get our first win under our belt and we got a good outing by Carson Busta on the mound in game one,” said Coach Dan Stepan. “In game two, the boys showed a lot of intestinal fortitude.”
TV jumped on the board in the first and utilized two four-run frames to take game won on nine hits, including a double by Noah Hanson. Busta and Calvin Bodensteiner combined for the seven innings on the mound with Busta striking out five. Garrett Kurtenbach had three hits in the contest, while Dylan Reicks raced around the bags to pick up three steals.
In game two, the Trojans plated two runs in the opening inning to take a 2-1 lead. Designated hitter Caleb Kurtenbach sent the ball over the rightfield fence in the second frame to put TV up 3-1. In the fifth inning it was older brother Garrett Kurtenbach’s turn to hit a bomb over the fence to give the Trojans a 4-1 advantage. CR/Central stormed back in the sixth with two runs; however, the Trojans held on for the 4-3 win.
On the hill it was Hanson picking up the win with 10 Ks. TV had six hits in all with the two home runs and two singles by Hanson.

Saturday tourney
Finishing off the first full week of competition, the Trojans competed at the annual New Hampton tournament Saturday. At the end of the day, TV fell to the Chickasaws 6-3 and Waterloo East 7-1.
Opening the day against the hosts, the Trojans threatened first with a Noah Hanson scoring in the top of the opening frame. The Chickasaws responded in the third to tie the score before TV’s Carson Busta added another tally to the scoreboard. Then NH went to work, putting together a three-run inning to take the lead and eventually the win.
Kalvin Langreck suffered the loss in his six innings on the mound. The Trojans tallied nine hits in the contests with Hanson, Dylan Reicks and Oliver Schmitt each accounting for two apiece.
“I thought the kids battled and stayed in the game until the end,” said Coach Dan Stepan. “In game two, we had a tough inning in the field, but I thought our kids got better as the day went on.”
The Trojans met Waterloo East in game two, giving up a run in each the second, third and fourth, before Calvin Bodensteiner crossed home plate in the fourth frame for the lone TV run.
Saddled with the loss was Hanson in his three innings on the mound with two runs scored on four hits, three walks and two strikeouts. Reicks and Bodensteiner each pounded out doubles in the game.
