Trojans tame Riceville 62-14

By Becky Walz,

Coming off two week’s rest, the Turkey Valley football team (2-1, 1-0) was clicking on all cylinders Friday night, besting Riceville (0-5, 0-3) on the road, 62-14.
“This was a good game to come off of a week off. Some minor errors in the first quarter showed we were a little rusty from the two week layoff. But the players settled in and controlled the game after the first few minutes,” said Coach Mark Scott. “On defense, except for two plays, we dominated the Riceville offense.”

A little review
Although Riceville scored twice in the first quarter, the game belonged to the Trojans from the get-go as Turkey Valley scored four times as well. Noah Hanson took the snap and scampered 32 yards to the end zone for the Trojans’ first touchdown of the game to give TV an 8-6 lead early. The Wildcats responded and put up eight points of their own on a 65-yard pass play. Carson Busta sandwiched a pair of TDs around Hanson’s second touchdown run of the game later in the first period. C. Busta first carried the pigskin 15 yards to the goal line and later broke loose from the Wildcat defense on a 42-yard run, giving the Trojans a 30-14 lead after the opening period.
In the second period it was C. Busta getting his name called again for a 36-yard blast that concluded in the end zone. Turkey Valley tacked on a safety and a 36-yard carry by Hanson again before Oliver Schmitt got in on the action for a 15-yard carry, giving Turkey Valley a 54-14 halftime lead.
Coming out of the locker room in the second half, Turkey Valley looked to some younger and more inexperienced players to step onto the gridiron. Neither squad scored in the third, but the Trojans wrapped up the win with a 12-yard carry by senior Victor Montiel in the final quarter.
“It was a good game to get some young players their first time in a game on a Friday night,” noted Coach Scott.

Stat sheet
The Trojans rushed for 429 yards and had 466 yards total.
   O. Schmitt carried the pigskin 11 times for 122 yards. Hanson picked up 107 to go with 37 yards of passing, while C. Busta had another 103.
It was a collective defensive effort. Troy Schmitt led the way with four solo tackles and two assists. O. Schmitt had three solo and three assisted tackles while Ryan Franzen had two solo stops.
“Mauricio Tinajero did an excellent job on kick offs, starting with three touchbacks, and later in the game he had one check up at the 1-yd line, leading to a safety soon after that,” added Coach Scott.

Friday is Homecoming
Turkey Valley will celebrate homecoming Friday, Sept. 23, versus Janesville with a 7 p.m. kick-off. The king and queen coronation will take place at halftime of the game.
